What to expect and wear for your Cape Town photo shoot

You have taken the first step and booked your Cape town photographer for your photo shoot or engagement session. So, what next? Well your work isn’t quite done. In order to get the most value out of your shoot there are a few factors you need to consider.

Firstly, you need to develop a mood board. This will give direction to your photographer and make sure expectations are clear. This will also ensure that there is a good flow during the session. As a start have a look at your photographer’s work and pin the images that you like.

Location is another factor, yet it is not the be all and end all. While having a picturesque location certainly adds punch and character to your imagery, it’s not a deal breaker if you can’t find the most beautiful spot. What’s more important is the available light, and a skilled photographer is able to make the most of available light and introduce artificial light if necessary.

The shoot should take place anytime from 3pm as this is when the sun light is more directional and hence we have less overhead shadows (the other option is before 9am – most people however, are not inclined to wake up at the crack of dawn for a photo shoot). Directional light counters the infamous raccoon eyes and adds depth and dimension to your images. A styled shoot will take anywhere between 2-3 hours with a possibility of two locations if they are within a close vicinity.

The focus must always be on the subjects irrespective of the scene. This location is not as dramatic but the viewer is drawn to the moment being shared by the couple

Wardrobe choice is very important. Typically, the duration of the shoot allows for a change of outfit. This is where you can bring out your personality, individuality and style. I recommend one look be more formal. Think of something you would wear to an event such as a product launch or gala. This elegant, opulent look is perfect for your engagement pictures and an album.

The other look can be more smart casual. I would not recommend wearing something you would wear to the mall though. While this look tends to be more spontaneous and natural, it still needs to be distinctive and chic.

What’s most important though is how much fun you have, and how comfortable you are during the shoot. While the first few minutes of the shoot invariably result in a bit of stiffness and a degree of awkwardness, thereafter you should let your natural personalities come to the fore.
